While the frigid waters of the poles may seem inhospitable to many people, the high latitude summer feeding grounds of the humpback whale are the veritable source for life of these great leviathans. In his mixed media Lucite sculpture, “Polar Seas,” Wyland reflects on his travels to the top of the world where humpbacks take advantage of the summer plankton bloom and the abundance of small fish. “Whales travel to cold waters for feeding,” Wyland says. “They go to warmer waters to give birth. In this piece, I wanted to celebrate the joy of abundance that these creatures experience each year after making their annual epic migration from the south.”
